Major state agencies fail to comply with climate law, report finds

Four major state agencies have failed to adopt policies to comply with New York’s emissions reduction law, which aims to cut greenhouse gasses 40 percent by 2030, an influential environmental coalition revealed Thursday.

That group, NY Renews, found in a new analysis that the state Transportation, Health and Education departments, as well as the state’s economic development arm, all failed in ensuring their policies don’t increase emissions or burden communities faced with historic environmental injustices.

The four agencies largely rejected the findings of the report.

One of them, the State Education Department, argued in its written response that the law does not apply to it because its text doesn’t explicitly mention the agency by name. None of the agencies provided POLITICO with policy guidelines on how they’re implementing the climate law.
