NY Renews Demands Governor Cuomo Sign Environmental Justice Bill

Coalition says governor is dragging his feet on statewide climate action

Albany, NY — NY Renews, the coalition behind New York’s nation leading climate law, today issued the following statement on the Environmental Justice Bill, A1564 / S2385. The Environmental Justice Bill was passed by the legislature in June, and would create an Environmental Justice Advisory Group to ensure state agencies consider environmental justice concerns as they implement the CLCPA. There is growing concern that because the two bills are linked, the CLCPA will not go into effect until the Environmental Justice Bill is signed.

“We call on Governor Cuomo to act on climate and sign the Environmental Justice Bill without delay. We cannot afford to play politics with one of the most pressing issues facing New York communities. There is no excuse for foot-dragging on implementing the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, and investing in frontline communities, by failing to sign the Environmental Justice Bill.

For too long, low-income communities and communities of color have borne the brunt of climate pollution and disaster, and have been ignored in devising climate solutions. We’re grateful to the legislature for passing the Environmental Justice bill this spring. It’s time for the Governor to demonstrate his commitment to climate justice and sign it into law.”
