In response to Governor Hochul signing the Climate Change Superfund Act into law, the NY Renews coalition released the following statement:
NY Renews, the statewide climate, jobs, and justice coalition of nearly 400 groups, applauds Governor Hochul’s signing of the Climate Change Superfund Act, a landmark bill that will make big polluters pay for the damage they have caused – and continue to cause – in New York State. This is what climate leadership needs to look like; we look forward to working with the governor and the legislature to ramp up efforts to meet the goals of New York’s historic Climate Act.
As wildfires burn out of control in Los Angeles, utterly destroying whole towns, taking on the escalating climate crisis boldly only becomes more urgent by the day. We are proud to have worked with NYPIRG, Third Act, and many other groups to get the bill across the finish line after several years of grassroots mobilization.
Our profound thanks to Senator Liz Krueger and Assemblymember Jeffrey Dinowitz, lead sponsors of the bill in their respective houses, along with legislative leadership and the strong majorities who voted for it.
