In response to Trump’s Executive Order attacks on “climate superfund” and cap-and-invest laws, the NY Renews coalition released the following statement:
President Trump's order attack on “climate superfund” and cap-and-invest laws is his latest attempt to destroy our constitutional rights and punish states taking action on the climate crisis. Like so much we’ve heard from the Trump administration, it has no basis in reality or in law. It will condemn New Yorkers to astronomical energy bills and a country where heat waves, floods, and other extreme weather events assault our health.
Study after study shows that failing to act on climate change creates massive economic and human costs for New Yorkers, far higher than the cost of transitioning to clean and efficient energy, transportation, and waste management systems that will improve our health and protect our future.
A well-designed cap-and-invest system would reduce energy bills for working- and middle-class households, require corporate polluters to pay their fair share to fund the switch to clean and efficient energy sources, and create thousands of good, family-sustaining jobs across our state.
President Trump envisions a world where the most vulnerable bear the brunt of the climate crisis. Governor Hochul, Attorney General James, and the State Legislature must defend our state's Climate Superfund Law, release existing Cap and Invest regulations to the public, and proceed with common-sense state actions to protect our health, our families, and our future.
