In response to the one-house budget proposals released by the New York State Senate and Assembly, NY Renews issued the following statement:
It’s clear that the New York State Senate takes climate and environmental justice seriously. The coalition applauds Senate leaders for including key climate measures and nearly half of the Climate, Jobs & Justice Package in their one-house budget proposal. Taken together, the Climate and Community Protection Fund, Climate Superfund Act, NY HEAT Act, Build Public Renewables Act, and the All-Electric Buildings Act—plus nation-leading climate labor standards and our coalition’s guidelines for a polluter cap-and-invest program—will help fund a just transition to renewable energy, create union jobs, boost our state economy, lower energy costs for families and small businesses, and provide significant benefits to communities at the frontlines of the climate crisis across New York State.
By contrast, the Assembly's one-house budget does not include significant measures to decrease climate pollution or protect our communities from the worst effects of the climate crisis, extreme heat, or rising energy costs.
We’re here to work with the Assembly and the Governor and her team to ensure they follow the lead of the NYS Senate in sending a powerful message that in New York, health, safety, climate, and justice must come first.
