After reviewing the executive budget, NY Renews today issued the following statement on Governor Hochul’s proposed cap and invest program. The coalition also released a guide for the just and effective implementation of a cap system in New York:
“Done right, a cap and invest system could be a key tool in securing climate justice in New York: money for frontline communities, paid for by polluters. Done wrong, a cap and invest system would only widen the gap between the haves and have-nots in our state: it could mean increased environmental harm for Black, Brown, Indigenous, and working New Yorkers. Governor Hochul’s executive budget cap and invest proposal is short on details, but the potential is there.
The NY Renews coalition has a draft plan to ensure a cap system works for New Yorkers statewide—especially disadvantaged communities most burdened by polluted air, extreme weather, and rising energy costs. We’re here to work with the Governor and her team so that the plan improves New Yorkers’ lives.
