NY Renews Statement on new Carbon Free NY and NYISO carbon pricing efforts
Albany, NY — NY Renews, the coalition of nearly 200 environmental, justice, faith, labor, and community groups, and the force behind the nation’s most progressive climate law, New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, today released the following statement on the new push for carbon pricing in New York, Carbon Free New York:
“The climate crisis will not be solved by false solutions. The only way forward is to make real investments in communities most impacted by the harmful effects of fossil fuels and the workers across the state who would benefit from expanding clean energy jobs. We need to do more than put a price on carbon and build renewables—we need to invest real funds into building a Just Transition for all New Yorkers.
For years, NY Renews has supported the Climate and Community Investment Act, which, in addition to making polluters pay for their noxious emissions, includes a detailed spending plan, developed in consultation with New Yorkers across the state, to invest in workers and communities. Any carbon price without such an investment falls short of what our state needs.”
